The Relationship Between Heart Rate and Life Expectancy
Calculate life expectancy based on heart rate.
This calculator estimates life expectancy based on the heart rate per minute (range input). There is a formula relating the total number of heartbeats in an animal’s lifetime to 2.0–2.3 billion beats.
- Calculation Formula
- Life Span (minutes) = 2.0–2.3 billion heartbeats ÷ heart rate (beats per minute)
- Body weight and heart rate are inversely proportional, and the total number of heartbeats in a lifetime is constant at 2.0–2.3 billion beats (theory proposed by Hiroshi Hayashi of Nagoya University)
- The lifespan of a mouse is approximately 4 years, and its heart rate is approximately 600 beats per minute
- An elephant’s lifespan is approximately 70 years, and its heart rate is approximately 40 beats per minute.
