Solar Noon and the Equation of Time
Calculate solar noon and the equation of time, and plot their variations throughout the year.
Due to the equation of time, the earliest sunset in Tokyo occurs not on the winter solstice, but around December 5.

The causes of the equation of time are the Earth’s elliptical orbit and the tilt of its axis.
Equation of time = Mean solar time − Apparent solar time
= (Time difference − Longitude/15) + 12 hours − Time of solar noon
When the longitude of standard time is specified, mean solar time corresponds to noon. (Japan is at 135 degrees east longitude.)
