Edo: Samurai Salaries
Convert the salaries of samurai who do not hold fiefs—such as “thirty tawara and two people’s sustenance”—into tawara or koku.
| When converted to “tawara,” | tawara、 |
| Equivalent in koku | kokuThis is the result. |
While the income of samurai with fiefs can be calculated by multiplying the kokudaka by the tax rate, I calculated how much the salaries of samurai who received a fixed rice allowance—such as “30 tawara, two-person allowance”—would be when converted to tawara or koku. If we consider 1 koku to be equal to 1 ryō, we can get a rough idea of the monetary value. Low-ranking samurai are called “sanpin samurai,” which refers to those with a stipend of three ryō plus a rice allowance for 1 person.
