- Clinic Blood Pressure and Home Blood Pressure
- Generally, blood pressure readings taken at home tend to be lower than those taken at a clinic. For this reason, the reference values are set slightly lower. At home, recording blood pressure daily under the same conditions not only serves as a guide for personal health management but also provides important diagnostic information for physicians. When determining hypertension, home blood pressure readings take precedence over clinic blood pressure readings.
- Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure
- Systolic blood pressure (systolic pressure) … The pressure when the heart contracts and pumps blood out.
- Diastolic blood pressure (diastolic pressure) … The pressure when the heart is relaxed.
- High Blood Pressure
- When pressure on the blood vessels persists over a long period, the media layer thickens and loses its elasticity, leading to the progression of atherosclerosis. As atherosclerosis progresses further, the risk of developing conditions such as angina, myocardial infarction, and stroke increases. Hypertension is also said to increase the risk of dementia.
- Lifestyle habits for prevention:
- Reducing salt intake, exercising, losing weight, limiting alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking
- Minerals help promote the excretion of salt and regulate blood pressure. Potassium is found in vegetables and seaweed; magnesium in seaweed, legumes, and nuts; and calcium in milk. If you have kidney disease or other medical conditions, please consult your doctor.
- Low Blood Pressure
- Generally, a systolic blood pressure of 100 mmHg or lower is considered low blood pressure. Symptoms may include difficulty waking up in the morning, dizziness, headaches, and general fatigue.
- Preventive Lifestyle Habits:
- Protein (meat, fish, soybeans)
- Consumption of vegetables and seaweed
