Calculation of Lump-Sum Childbirth Allowance, Maternity Allowance, and Childcare Leave Benefits
This tool calculates approximate amounts for the lump-sum childbirth allowance, maternity allowance, and child-care leave allowance.
- Lump-sum childbirth and childcare allowance
- When an insured person or their dependent gives birth, 500,000 yen per child is paid from April, Reiwa 5 onward (420,000 yen before that). However, the amount is 488,000 yen for births at medical institutions, etc. not participating in the obstetric medical compensation system.
The allowance is also paid for stillbirth or miscarriage if at least 4 months (85 days) of pregnancy have elapsed. - Maternity allowance
- Health insurance pays this allowance for the period from 42 days before the birth date (98 days for a multiple pregnancy) through 56 days beginning the day after childbirth. If childbirth is later than the due date, the due date is used as the starting reference. However, no allowance is payable for periods during which wages are paid. Prenatal leave is calculated on the assumption that it starts 42 days before the due date.
- Average standard daily remuneration = Standard monthly remuneration / 30 (round to the nearest 10)
- Maternity allowance = Average standard daily remuneration × 2/3 × Maternity leave days (round the daily amount multiplied by 2/3 to the nearest whole number)/li>
- Maximum daily wage at the start of leave (August 1, Reiwa 8): 16,540 yen
- Postnatal leave support benefit
- The insured person must have taken a total of at least 14 days of postnatal paternity leave eligible for the childbirth childcare leave benefit or childcare leave eligible for the childcare leave benefit for the same child during the eligible period. Their spouse must have taken a total of at least 14 days of childcare leave during the period from the earlier of the child's birth date and due date through the day after 8 weeks have elapsed from the later of those dates. Alternatively, on the day after the child's birth, a case in which the spouse's childcare leave is not required must apply. Effective from April, Reiwa 7.
- Formula
- Postnatal leave support benefit = Daily wage × Leave days (14–28 days) × 13%
- Childcare leave benefit
- Insured persons who take childcare leave to care for a child under 1 may receive this benefit if certain requirements are met. (It may be extended until the child is 1 year and 6 months or 2 years old, for example when childcare placement is unavailable. This calculator does not support cases in which both parents take childcare leave (Papa-Mama Childcare Leave Plus). Updated for the revised limits effective August 1, Reiwa 7.
- Formulas
- Monthly childcare leave benefit (first 6 months) = Wages × 67%
- Monthly childcare leave benefit (after 6 months) = Wages × 50%
- Benefit for reduced working hours for childcare
- This benefit supports balancing work and childcare by making reduced working hours easier to choose as a flexible working arrangement while raising children. It is paid when a person works reduced hours to care for a child under 2 (referred to as reduced-hours work for childcare) and meets requirements such as a decline in wages compared with before the reduction in working hours.
- Taxes and social insurance premiums
- The lump-sum childbirth and childcare allowance, maternity allowance and childcare leave benefit are all tax-exempt, and social insurance premiums (health insurance plus employees' pension insurance) are waived.
