Calculate the SSI from temperature and humidity
| Dew point temperature | ℃ |
| Condensation Temperature | ℃ |
| Temperature at the set atmospheric pressure | K |
| Condensation pressure | hPa |
| Air temperature | ℃ |
| SSI | ℃ |
SSI = 500 hPa air temperature – the temperature of air at the set pressure when raised to 500 hPa
■Guidelines
SSI > 3°C: Stable
0–-3°C: Possibility of thunderstorms
-4–-6°C: Possibility of severe thunderstorms
<-6°C: High probability of severe thunderstorms
(Reference: Thunderstorms and Mesometeorology by Hisao Ohno, Tokyo-do Publishing)
The condensation level is calculated using Equation 1 for the lifted condensation level (see Related Links below).
Water vapor pressure is calculated using the WMO approximation formula (see Related Links below).
Adiabatic saturation calculations are performed by lifting the air from the condensation level to 500 hPa in 10 hPa increments.
