From a Daily Mail article titled “Mathematicians create a formula for the perfect Christmas Day, and say the key is turning OFF the TV.” It calculates the probability of having a perfectly enjoyable Christmas.
Pmerry: Probability of having a fun Christmas (%)
Nm: Number of smartphones in the house on Christmas Day
Ng: Number of game consoles in the house on Christmas Day
m: Number of smartphones left turned on during Christmas
g: Number of game consoles powered on during Christmas
Tq: Duration of Queen Elizabeth’s speech (time expressed in 24-hour clock format using decimal notation; e.g., 1.2 hours)
T: Time the TV is on (same as above)
M, G, Q: Misfortune factor parameters
The unhappiness factor parameters are set to 1 for families who managed just fine
without using the TV, game consoles, or smartphones; for families who did use them, the value becomes 2, 3, and so on, depending on the number of people.
If you didn’t turn on the TV for anything other than Queen Elizabeth’s speech and didn’t use smartphones or game consoles,
the probability of having a Merry Christmas would be 100%!
