Calculating the Refund Amount for a Commuter Pass
Calculates the refund amount for the specified train commuter pass.
| Refund Amount | Yen(Amount after handling fees have been deducted) |
- Refunds
- Most operators allow prorated refunds within 7 days after use begins.
- General rule:
- After 7 days, refunds are generally calculated in whole months. Use for 1 month and 1 day or more is counted as 2 months.
- 6-month pass used for 1 month and 2 days=6-month pass price−1-month pass price x 2−Fee
- 6-month pass used for 4 months and 2 days=6-month pass price−(3-month pass price+1-month pass price × 2) − Fee
- Exception 1:
- JR Kyushu, JR Hokkaido, Meitetsu, Nishitetsu, Fukuoka City Subway, Nagoya City Transportation Bureau, and Kyoto Municipal Subway allow prorated refunds for periods shorter than 1 month.
- 6-month pass used for 1 month and 2 days=6-month pass price−1-month pass price − Round-trip fare x 2 - Fee
- 6-month pass used for 4 months and 2 days=6-month pass price−(3-month pass price + 1-month pass price) − Round-trip fare x 2 − Fee
- Exception 2:
- For Nagoya City Transportation Bureau, the elapsed months are calculated as n times the price of a 1-month pass.
- 6-month pass used for 1 month and 2 days=6-month pass price−1-month pass price − Round-trip fare x 2 - Fee
- 6-month pass used for 4 months and 2 days=6-month pass price−(1-month pass price x 4) − Round-trip fare x 2 − Fee
- *If the round-trip fare x days used exceeds the price of a 1-month pass, the price of a 1-month pass is used.
- Route changes
For route changes, the period is calculated in ten-day units. If the replacement pass is for the same railway operator, the old pass can be refunded after purchasing the pass for the new route. However, route changes are not available for JR Kyushu, JR Hokkaido, Meitetsu, or Nagoya City Transportation Bureau.- Refund=Pass fare −(Ten-day units used×Daily pass fare×10)− Fee
The daily pass fare is calculated by dividing the pass price by 30 for a 1-month pass, 90 for a 3-month pass, or 180 for a 6-month pass. Fractions below 1 yen are rounded up to the next 1 yen.
How to count ten-day units
A ten-day unit is based on dividing 1 month into 3 periods of 10 days. When counting across the end of a month that does not have 30 days, 1 such unit may not be exactly 10 days.- Unit 1…2/21〜2/28 (29 in leap years)
- Unit 2…3/1〜3/10
- Unit 3…3/11〜3/20
- Unit 4…3/21〜3/30
- Unit 5…3/31〜4/10
- Fees
- Fees are approximately 220〜520 yen, depending on the operator.
- Identification (such as a driving license, passport, health insurance card, or student ID) is required for a refund. If you paid by credit card, you must present the same card used for the purchase. A cash refund is not available.
